Clean Eating Chili

Friends, I know I’ve told you this a zillion times, but in case this is your first visit with me, I’m going go bring it up again.

Those packaged seasoning mixes are filled with added sugars, starches and fillers.  All things our bodies are not meant to digest and use as fuel.  But there is an easy way to get around that:  make your own seasoning blends!  Trust me here.  Yes, individual spices may be more expensive.  But think of it this way:  you have the initial purchase.  But that container of that spice is going to last you for so long, you will end up saving money, even buying multiple spices for different blends.  Believe me.  I’ve been traveling down this road for nearly two years now, and I have yet to buy more of almost all of my spices, with the exception of sea salt and onion powder—those two seem to go pretty quickly, because I don’t always want to chop up onions, and the salt because I have a husband.  Yes, that’s the end of that thought…

At any rate, you can also make up a larger batch of this seasoning blend and store it in a Mason jar for future times—another time-saver! And then just use 2 tbsp of the mixture in the recipe when you make a batch.

Seasoning mixture

  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper

Chili ingredients

  • ½ tbsp coconut sugar
  • 2 lbs ground turkey
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 15 ounce can diced fire-roasted tomatoes
  • 1 small can tomato paste
  • 1 cup water, chicken, beef or bone broth

Brown ground turkey and drain.  Add seasoning and chopped onion and cook for 20 minutes, to roast spices with the meat.  Add remaining ingredients and cook for another 30 minutes to allow flavors to develop.

To make vegan, substitute turkey with a can each of drained black and white beans.

Whip up a batch and lemme know whatcha think!
