Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes

One of my very favorites from my childhood is Sloppy Joe’s. But…uh-ohhhhhhh…not so clean!! Too much sugar, believe it or not. So to the drawing board I went. And it was so easy!! Something you need to know going in, you need Worcestershire Sauce to make a good Sloppy Joe. But not to worry, I gotchu. I have a clean version here on the blog, and it will make enough to last you awhile!

As always, first I’ll give you the recipe and then I’ll give you some tweaks you may want to give a try.

  • 1 pound ground Turkey
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery (or 1 teaspoon celery salt)
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 green pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 red pepper chopped
  • 2 tbsp coconut sugar
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tbsp mustard powder

In a sautee pan, warm a tablespoon of olive oil. Cook onions and garlic until fragrant and translucent. Add turkey, mix and cook through until browned. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Simmer 10-15 minutes to cook celery and peppers through and reduce sauce. Salt and pepper to taste.

I used another recipe that used a tablespoon of chili powder and a teaspoon of cumin in place of the Worcestershire and mustard powder. It was tasty, but I found it very spicy (and I’m a wuss when it comes to spice) and tasted more like chili than Sloppy Joe. I’ve used both plain and fire-roasted diced tomatoes, both very yummy.

I’ve put this over baked and roasted sweet potato, brown rice rotini and macaroni, and when I really wanted to indulge, on a slice of Dave’s Killer Super Seed Bread. All the yummy comfort food feels!!! And then I add on a nice big pile of salad to round out my meal.

Give it a try and let me know what you think! Enjoy!!
